Certainly it's less important than what kind of education you'll actually get, but having a brand-name degree (so to speak) can be best creative writing now let's get to the good stuff: the list of schools! 1: northwestern estern's undergrad creative writing program boasts acclaimed professors and an unparalleled track record of turning out successful writers (including divergent author veronica roth and short-story writer karen russell). The classroom, you can work on the student-run literary journal, intern at a publication in nearby chicago, or submit to the department of english's yearly writing competition. 2: columbia northwestern, columbia is home to both a world-class creative writing program and a top journalism school (plus one of the best english departments in the country), so you have a wide range of writing-related course options. 3: university of sity of iowa's big draw is the infrastructure from its graduate writers' workshop, which is the best mfa program in the country. Trying to assess graduate writing programs is like rating the top-10 party schools: you can count how many bottles go in, and how many empties go out, but you can’t prove the party was fun. Determining which writing programs are best is an alchemy of hearsay, tenuous connectors, certain measurable facts, and one’s own predilections about the art of writing. The number of graduate creative-writing programs has risen from about 50 three decades ago to perhaps 300 now. For all those reasons, the question of which programs are “best” has value beyond just “writer talk,” and the answers—there are many—aren’t always easy to determine.
