Qwertyon april 22, 2013format: hardcoverthe most refreshing thing about this book is the way that it looks at creative writing through such a distinct epistemological lens. For years, as i studied creative writing in varying english departments, i always found literary theory courses distinctly frustrating. But it was the closest thing available to a theoretical framework for writing, and they couldn't just pat our heads and give us ba's/ma's/phd's for writing a few pretty poems and being on our way. It occurred to me as very odd that there was no distinct theory for creative writing.

The reason being, of course that creative writing, as a subject for university study, hasn't been around very long. While universities have produced creative writers for hundreds of years, it's only in the last 20-25 years or so when creative writing has been officially recognized and offered as a specific course of study. In comparison to the centuries full of legendary academic figures in literary study, creative writing is a subject in its infancy, a field with a desperate need for its own legends of theory to be this book presents is a starting place: the beginnings of a theoretical framework distinct to the study and practice of creative writing. It does not use the fact of creative writing's praxis as an excuse, does not claim that praxis and theory must be forever antithetical to one another; rather, it encourages students and faculty alike to include the practicalities and purposes of writing in our theoretical studies. Instead of trying to study literature and writing in a vacuum, it shows how to create new theories, how to begin to analytically and honestly assess creativity, productivity, and the fact that writers, if not their books, will always have to deal with the question of audience. It does not eschew the idea that books are written to be read and enjoyed--that the more plebeian and pedestrian can often give satisfaction that more traditionally studied writing may not be able to, that creative writing cannot exist without considerations of the practical, even, [heresy] the market, and it shows how to look at all of these as part of the literary experience--only, from the production side this time.
