National academy of sciences (nas), peer is a competitive grants program that invites scientists in developing countries, partnered with usg-supported collaborators, to apply for funds to support research and capacity-building activities on topics with strong potential development impacts.

This innovative program is designed to leverage the investments other usg-supported agencies have made in scientific research and training while supporting the initiatives of developing country scientists. Peer is once again inviting researchers in selected developing countries to apply for funding support to carry out projects in a variety of topical and geographic focus areas. This cycle marks the return of the program's open call for proposals from all 65 eligible countries on a wide range of development-related fields, including biodiversity, agriculture, environment, clean energy, disaster mitigation, food security, water/sanitation, urbanization, democracy and governance, and education. Proposals on selected health-related topics may be appropriate for submission under the new focus area multiple countries/family planning and reproductive health.

Several countries are the focus of specially targeted calls this cycle, including cambodia, indonesia, haiti, laos, peru, tunisia, and zambia. A recorded version of the webinar including the slides and narration will be posted here several days after the event, so that those who are unable to participate live will still have the opportunity to receive the l opportunity for current and former peer grant recipientspeer is currently inviting researchers with an active peer award or who have had a peer award in the past to apply for small supplemental grants. Evidence to action supplements are available for researcher-led activities designed to translate peer research into action, and peer pis and co-pis whose projects began before january 1, 2017, are eligible to apply. Government (usg)-supported partner cooperation supplements are also available to help support the costs of bringing partners and members of their research teams to a current peer awardee’s location.

A total of 28 projects were selected for funding in peer cycle 6, bringing the number of projects supported since the program began in 2011 to 282. The forum counted over 130 peer pis, team members, ngo and private sector representatives, and national and international government officials in attendance and focused on how the evidence generated by peer researchers can help policymakers make better informed decisions. A one-day event ahead of the indus basin knowledge forum hosted by the international water management institute (iwmi), the kabul river basin forum was an opportunity for peer researchers in afghanistan, kazakhstan, and pakistan working in the kabul river basin to interact with each other and share their experience and results. In addition, the forum provided an opportunity for representatives from various usaid missions, us embassies, governments, and donor agencies to learn more about peer research in the kabul river basin and to build connections with peer researchers.
