Though small—we typically admit six new students each year—the mfa is just one part of a vibrant writing community including five post-graduate fellows, former fellows and alums, phd candidates in contemporary literature, and a host of other artists and writers living and working in madison. This allows us to provide an almost unrivaled 2-to-1 student/teacher ratio that gives each class of students the full attention of the faculty in their genre for two solid of our mfa candidates receive generous financial aid, the opportunity to teach courses both in creative writing and english composition, and a semester of teacher-training and support. Rather than restrict ourselves to a particular style of writing, we are interested in voices that strike us as fresh and compelling. We suggest that, while you not give short shrift to any of your application materials, the bulk of your energy should go to polishing your writing sample, which is the most important factor by far in our decision process. A: the program in creative writing does not believe a gpa is indicative of future success in an arts program like ours.
